The M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) and Hudson City Bancorp Inc. (NASDAQ: HCBK) transaction is the only pending deal of 2012 vintage due to various regulatory concerns. MTB currently has 9% short interest outstanding and PACW 15%. Ahead Of Earnings: NOK, JBLU, PFE, PBI

By Neal Rau

Prepare for earnings in a comprehensive manner by reviewing both the expectations and the recent decisions of smart money. We have done that for these companies scheduled to report soon.

The following companies report earnings on October 29, 2013:

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) is expected to report Q3 earnings before the market open. Analysts' estimates are for the company to earn $0.00, or break even for the quarter. In Q2, the company reported an operating loss of $151 million from revenues of $7.46 billion. The numbers missed analysts' estimates. Nokia sold about eight million phones between July and September, which is almost triple the amount it sold in the same period a year ago. Nokia will also release its phablet, which will run the new Windows operating system. Some people think the company may never be the leader in smart phone sales again, however it looks like it is making progress based on the impressive recent phone sales. The stock is up 84% YTD and trading at the highest level in two years. Should investors buy, sell or hold into earnings?

Based on the real-time trading report published by Stock Traders Daily, NOK is close to a test of long-term resistance, and right before earnings. Even if the company beats estimates on Tuesday, it does not mean the stock will continue to rise. Smart money is likely to take profits near resistance before earnings, especially after such a big move up in share price. According to our rule, we are sellers at resistance, and as long as the stock remains below resistance, we expect lower levels and a test of support. That would make NOK a sell/short at resistance, with risk controls in place if resistance breaks higher.

JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ:JBLU) is scheduled to report earnings before the market open. The company is expected to report $0.22 per share, which would be a 69% increase versus the $0.13 JetBlue reported in the same quarter a year ago. JetBlue is going to be launching a premium brand next s! ummer that will offer high-end seating for the New York to Los Angeles and New York to San Francisco routes. The company plans to offer slightly lower fares than competitors with newer and more modern planes. The stock is up 29% YTD and up over 11% in the last few weeks. Is JBLU still a good buy after the recent run up?

Based on the Stock Traders Daily real-time trading report, the stock has broken above long-term resistance, which is now converted support. That is a very bullish sign, and so far, converted support is holding, as long as that remains true, the rules that govern our strategies tell us to expect higher levels. However, converted support also acts as our risk control, and if converted support breaks lower, we would stop out of that long position. We are buyers at that converted support level, but caution buyers not to chase the stock. New long positions would only be advised near converted support, according to our real-time trading report for JBLU.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) is scheduled to report $0.56 per share when the company reports before the bell, which would be $0.03 better than the same quarter a year ago. Pfizer continues to invest heavily in research and development activities. The company owns many profitable patents, which should keep a steady flow of royalties coming in. The stock has been performing well, as it is up 23% YTD and up over 74% in the last 3 years. Is the stock still a good buy at current levels?

The company looks strong, but even if the company beats estimates on Tuesday, it does not mean the stock will continue to rise, as the chart shows that price matters. The stock is near a test of long-term resistance, and last time it tested long-term resistance back in April, the stock fell 11% within a month. Smart money will be watching resistance again, as the stock is getting close, and this time right before earnings. According to our rule, we are sellers at resistance, and as long as the stock remains below long-term resistance, we expect lower leve! ls and a ! test of support. Based on the real-time trading report published by Stock Traders Daily, PFE is a sell/short at resistance, with risk controls in place if resistance breaks higher.

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE:PBI) is expected to report earnings of $0.41 per share for its third quarter when the company reports before the market open, which would be $0.03 less than the same quarter a year ago. PBI recently disclosed that it expects to take $25 million charge in Q3. Last quarter PBI beat on EPS by $0.09, missed on revs, and guided FY13 EPS below consensus. However, the stock spiked on the news that Apollo Global Management would acquire Management Services Business from Pitney Bowes for ~ $400 million in cash. The stock is up 87% YTD, and trading close to the 52-week high. Should investors buy shares of Pitney Bowes ahead of earnings?

Based on the real-time trading report offered by Stock Traders Daily, shares of PBI are getting close to a test of long-term resistance, and as a rule we are sellers if resistance is tested (not there yet). If the stock does test long-term resistance and remains below resistance, we would expect a full oscillation back to support. However, resistance also acts as our risk control, and if resistance breaks higher, bullish signals would surface. We would be selling shares ahead of earnings if resistance, if those levels are tested, according to the PBI real-time trading report.

Navigating earnings can be tricky. Sometimes investors' earnings expectations are correct, but the stocks actually do the opposite of what they think it should have done after earnings, so our opinion based on price can help investors make more well-rounded and sound investment decisions.

Why Federal-Mogul Shares Skyrocketed

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Federal-Mogul (NASDAQ: FDML  ) , an auto parts and vehicles components supplier, soared 26% after the company handily topped Wall Street's EPS expectations in the second quarter.

So what: For the quarter, Federal-Mogul reported a 6% increase in sales to $1.77 billion and saw profits rise to $0.57 per share, decisively reversing a year-ago loss of $0.60 per share. Comparatively, Wall Street was forecasting sales of $1.73 billion and a profit of just $0.39 per share. Federal-Mogul benefited from a stabilization in European sales, as well as closures of factories in North America and Western Europe, which helped bring down expenses.

Now what: Given Federal-Mogul's shaky history, I can't say I'm much of a fan of the company. It emerged from bankruptcy some five years ago right into the deepest recession we've witnessed in 70 years – hardly what I'd call great terms. Although its European business is improving, Europe itself isn't expected to show signs of life for years because of steep spending cuts, meaning that Federal-Mogul's cost-cutting initiatives will only drive the bottom line so far. The "X factor" here, though, is Carl Icahn, who owns a majority stake in the company. Icahn is an activist investor that's known for turning frowns upside down in the business world and could single-handedly allow calmer heads to prevail over the long run. Personally, I'd suggest waiting a few more quarters to see if this turnaround is for real or just an anomaly among a series of bad quarters.

With Europe struggling and U.S. auto sales advancing at a snail's pace, automakers and supplier are turning to China, the world's largest auto market, for their next great growth opportunity. A recent Motley Fool report, "2 Automakers to Buy for a Surging Chinese Market", names two global giants poised to reap big gains that could drive big rewards for investors. 10 Best Tech Stocks To Own Right Now

Alamy You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From a new tablet from Amazon to Microsoft giving Windows an overdue makeover, here are some of the items that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Bank on It: We're just getting started with earnings season, but Monday will be relatively quiet on that front. One of the few companies kicking off the week with fresh financials will be Wintrust (WTFC), a financial holding company with $18 billion in assets. It operates 15 different community bank subsidiaries with 100 different locations. It may not be the same kind of snapshot of the financial industry that we got this past Friday when bigger banks reported, but we can't ignore the importance of community banks in gauging the state of the economic turnaround. Tuesday -- Pop Stars: Coca-Cola (KO) reports on Tuesday, and if that isn't enough we will have PepsiCo (PEP) checking in on Wednesday. Coke and Pepsi have been battling one another for years, but in some ways, they're united against common adversaries these days. Between the growing popularity of making sodas at home, and critics taking them on over the health implications of consuming too many sugary (or artificially sweetened) drinks, it's a whole different kind of cola war these days. Investors looking for growth may want to look elsewhere. Analysts see Pepsi's revenue inching just 2 percent higher when it reports. It's worse for Coca-Cola, with Wall Street targeting a 2 percent decline in sales. Wednesday -- Paypal Day: eBay (EBAY) reports its third quarter results on Wednesday. There was a time when eBay was strictly an online flea market, but these days we're seeing PayPal become a bigger part of the model. Yes, eBay also owns PayPal, the most popular way to settle online transactions outside of plastic. PayPal has started to expand its reach into traditional retailers, making it possible for someone to check out at a physical storefront using PayPal. Analysts see revenue and earnings growing by 15 percent for the quarter, and it's a fair bet that PayPal will be the one carrying the company again this period. Thursday -- Microsoft Gets a Do Over: It's been a year since Microsoft (MSFT) rolled out Windows 8. The operating system -- built from the ground up with tablets and other touch-screen experiences in mind -- was supposed to breathe new life into the struggling PC industry. It fell short. PC sales have fallen every quarter since the Windows 8 roll out, and while the software giant has sold a ton of licenses, users have had mixed feelings about the platform. Windows 8.1 will be available online on Thursday as an upgrade, tackling many of the customization flaws in the original version. A hard copy of the software will be available at retailers a day later. It may not be enough to rescue the PC industry, but at least it will give computer users something different to kick around. Friday -- Another Kindle is Born: There will be Surfaces, iPads, and other tablets hitting the market later this month, but on Friday we get to see Amazon.com's (AMZN) latest toy when the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX hits the market. Amazon is pricing the new device aggressively, as it did for its previous models. Despite a rich spec sheet, the Kindle Fire HDX starts at just $229. Amazon isn't out to turn a profit on the hardware. It knows that the real money waits in the digital downloads that can be purchased through its ecosystem. A neat feature here is Mayday, through which visual tech support will be available for free. Techies won't be able to see you through the tablet's camera, but they will be able to see what you're doing and tackle what ails your Kindle Fire. Let's hope that the early adopters don't abuse the perk.

Hot Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

If there one thing which stands out about the West since 2008, it this: There been almost no substantive economic reform. There been a lot of money printed, talking up of prospects (forward guidance in central banker parlance), huge subsidies to save certain sectors, but little restructuring of economies to put them on a more sustainable footing. Where the financial crisis showed the dangers of relying on ever-expanding debt to fund consumption, that reliance has only increased since.

Asia isn immune from criticism on the reform front either. Much of the region has been busy congratulating itself for avoiding the worst of 2008, while ignoring the growing problems at home. China has fallen into the western-style trap of relying on more debt to produce enough economic growth to ward off a serious downturn. India in trouble after backtracking on the broad-ranging reforms of the early 1990s which fueled an average 6% GDP growth over the past two decades. Meanwhile, Indonesiaonsidered the rising star of Asian economies only a short time agoas slowed quickly after keeping interest rates too low for too long and failing to sufficiently cut spending on the likes of energy subsidies.

  • [By Wall Street Sector Selector]

Previous to last week's solar flare, the sector has suffered through some awful growing pains. The financial crisis resulted in reduced subsidies for development in the rapidly-advancing photovoltaic power industry. Meanwhile, China increased government financing of its solar industry, having already established a strong presence in the sector with such companies as Suntech Power (STP) and LDK Solar (LDK).

LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) is on the brink of failure after another terrible performance in the first quarter. The company is paying more than half of its revenue in interest payments and is begging creditors to refinance debt so that it can stay alive. For equity investors there is little upside given the company's high debt load and massive losses. Fool.com contributor Travis Hoium weighs in on LDK's situation.

Rieder: Quirky BuzzFeed has its serious side

BuzzFeed is one of the more intriguing websites out there, and not just because of its zany lists and linkbait photos.

The much-visited, Internet-meme-happy site is steadily becoming a journalistic force.

In its latest foray into the world of serious news, BuzzFeed is launching an investigative reporting unit. And it has recruited a journalist with sterling credentials to run it.

Make no mistake: BuzzFeed is still BuzzFeed. As I write this, it's ballyhooing such fare as "This Is Why We Should All Love Bats" and "A Definitive Ranking Of Every Slang Term For Vomiting."

RIEDER: Why Buffett didn't buy 'Washington Post'

But go to the verticals for "world," "politics" and "longform" and you'll encounter the real deal.

BuzzFeed's ongoing evolution into a news organization is good news, indeed, for people who care about journalism, which is so vital in a democratic society. Given that many traditional news outlets have cut back in the face of the digital revolution, some of them severely, it's vital that new players enter the arena.

And they have. ProPublica has established itself as a potent investigative reporting machine. The Huffington Post has added original reporting to its mix. Politico has emerged as the go-to spot for political junkies. Local news websites have sprung up across the country.

And waiting in the wings is eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, who plans to invest $250 million in an ambitious new journalism venture.

RIEDER: Can rich tech dudes save journalism?

BuzzFeed began this journey in December 2011 when it hired Ben Smith, then a top political blogger at Politico, to assemble a team to cover the 2012 presidential election. It did a fine job. Since then, BuzzFeed has set up a longform, magazine-style journalism operation, started up business coverage and hired five foreign correspondents — at a time when original overseas reporting has vanished at many legacy news outlets. BuzzFeed now has 130 journalists on the roster.

To ove! rsee the investigative unit, BuzzFeed landed an impressive get: Mark Schoofs, a senior editor at ProPublica. Schoofs also spent more than 11 years at The Wall Street Journal, where he was a foreign correspondent and investigative reporter. And when he was at the Village Voice, Schoofs won a Pulitzer in 2000 for an eight-part series on AIDS in Africa.

So why would anyone leave a perch at a highly regarded investigative reporting haven like ProPublica to go to the likes of BuzzFeed? Schoofs cites two reasons.

First, he says, "BuzzFeed wants to blend the best of American journalism's great tradition of rigorous, bulletproof, deep-digging investigative stories with the digital reality" of how people access news today. Rather than go to individual websites, people are apt to scour their smartphones for material shared on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

And if you want people to share your content, Schoofs says, "You have to have scoops. You have to be definitive. You have to do the work."

And, he adds, it's BuzzFeed who figured that out. "That's visionary," he says.

The second reason for making the move, Schoofs says: "It's such an amazing personal opportunity to build from scratch an investigative reporting team."

Whenever anyone leaves a company, it's natural to speculate that there was something going on that the job-switcher didn't like. In this case, Schoofs says, "I loved where I was. It's a great, extraordinary institution."

In fact, he says, his goal is to "continue the ProPublica mission" in his new gig.

Schoofs says he plans to hire six or seven reporters during his first year. He won't start until Jan. 1 so he can finish up a project he's working on at ProPublica.

Smith, BuzzFeed's editor-in-chief, uses a baseball analogy to explain BuzzFeed's leap into investigative reporting and other deep dives.

"I'm basically a singles hitter," he says, citing former Red Sox small-ball mainstay Wade Boggs as his favorite player. But he ! admires t! he kind of stories where you have to "swing for the fences."

"Investigative reporting is very important," he says, citing the allure of telling people something they don't know.

In addition to directing his own team, Schoofs will help other BuzzFeed reporters develop investigative stories from their beat reporting.

Asked why BuzzFeed has added serious journalism to its arsenal in such a big way, Smith says the reason lies in the nature of the material people are apt to share. And Buzzfeed has been all about the sharing from the get-go.

It used to be people were more likely to pass along animal photos and the like. Now many people are sharing news, which is the reason BuzzFeed hired him in the first place.

I asked Smith for his vision of the future of this unlikely amalgam of empty calories and rich fare.

"We're very ambitious," he replied. "We'd like to compete with everybody, both in journalism and entertaining content."

So, congratulations for jumping into the investigative reporting game, BuzzFeed. We need as much of it as we can get.

Does the Fed Have More Ammo?

Best Cheap Companies For 2014

Since the Fed's no-tapering announcement in September, investors have been wondering when the Fed will actually pull the trigger on tapering, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks.

As I look at the US and global financial markets right now, I keep thinking of that iconic scene in Dirty Harry.

Clint Eastwood is facing a piece of urban pond scum whose own gun is on the ground but within reach. Eastwood has got him dead in his sights, but after a running gun battle, he could be out of ammunition.

"I know what you're thinking," says Eastwood's detective Harry Callahan. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"

Investors face a similar situation now as we try to decide if the Fed is out of the ammunition it has used to prop up the economy.

You recall the scene. The punk decides Harry's gun is empty, reaches for his own and winds up floating face down in the midst of a spreading patch of bloody water.

While not wanting to suggest that either you or I are equivalent to Dirty Harry's punk, I do think Eastwood's question is appropriate for us now.

The Federal Reserve, the People's Bank, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and other of the world's central banks have fired a lot of ammunition—first, to head off banking system meltdowns, and second, to try to stimulate their economies into sustainable growth. Global financial markets rallied on that action with some stock markets—the US and German markets, for example—moving up to all-time highs and already low bond yields falling even lower as bond prices moved up.

Now, with global growth rates nothing to write Sister Sara about, with politicians in Washington DC about to begin another round of budget negotiations that may make Riot in Cell Block 11 look like a shining beacon of good faith, and with some economies showing all the emotional bounce of the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (to continue and conclude this post's Don Siegel homage), financial markets are rallying again on hope that the central banks have more bullets left in their guns.

Well, do you feel lucky? And if you do, for how long?

It's a gambler's market

Let's be clear, I hate investing when it resembles gambling. I like markets with clear macro trends behind them, such as the falling yields that characterized the bond markets since the early 1980s. (That trend is over now.) And I like markets without trends and where the fundamentals drive individual stocks.

But I really dislike markets where the direction of macro trends is up for grabs; where traders and investors are trying to bet that that they can guess the results of an essentially binary decision; and where the results of that binary decision—in the latest case, a taper/no taper decision by the Federal Reserve—will drive most drive stock prices in one direction or another, overwhelming the fundamentals of the vast majority of individual stocks.

That's exactly where we are right now.

Which is almost certainly good news through November and into December. After that, though, I've got to wonder how lucky we'll be and for how long.

The economy may be tapering

The consensus opinion on Wall Street at the moment is that the Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee, the group that will decide when the central bank will start to cut back on its current $85 billion in monthly purchases of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, won't start to cut back on its current $85 billion in monthly purchases of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, won't start the taper at its October 30 meeting. The thinking is that the Fed won't have enough data on the economy to decide if US growth is strong enough to stand up to a withdrawal of some of those purchases. It's not the direct effect on the economy of cutting purchases to $70 billion or $75 billion a month that concerns the Fed, but the effect of any follow-on increase in interest rates and the potential that higher rates might slow sales in sectors of the economy, such as housing and autos, that rely on financing.

Since there is no Fed meeting in November, the earliest that the Open Market Committee could begin a taper of the Fed's purchases would then be the December 18 meeting. But the Wall Street consensus is that the Fed won't act at that meeting, either. That consensus is based on the belief that the government shutdown and the debt-ceiling crisis whacked something like 0.6 percentage points out of annualized GDP growth for 2013. That translates into a drop in annualized growth in the fourth quarter, from a projected 3%, according to estimates by Standard & Poor's, to 2%.

Best Insurance Stocks To Watch Right Now

Down big earlier in the day, the S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) regained some of its standing by the time of the closing bell, but it still wasn't quite enough: The index suffered its worst week of 2013 in the first week of April, losing 1% in the past five trading days. But even as the S&P had its fair share of losers Friday, three stocks in particular stood out as major laggards.

The victim of a severe double-whammy, F5 Networks (NASDAQ: FFIV  ) simply got pummeled today, falling 19%, after preliminary quarterly projections caused a flurry of analyst downgrades. In a true sign of just how awful its second quarter guidance was, the network technology provider even dragged down several of its competitors today, as Wall Street worried whether the numbers were an indication of the industry's fundamental health.

It's hard to outdo nearly 20% losses, but Aflac's (NYSE: AFL  ) 3.9% slide today was nothing to scoff at, either. Shares of the insurer slumped as bond yields declined further; investment capital flocked from equities to lower-risk bonds, driving 10-year Treasuries to a mere 1.7% rate. Low rates are especially harmful to insurance giants like Aflac, which can hold billions of dollars in low-risk securities as collateral for potential policy payouts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

Beyond mortgage insurance, not everything has gone well at Genworth. Its long-term care insurance business continues to struggle, with operating profits having fallen by more than 40% as Genworth struggles to get regulators to allow it to increase rates enough to make the business economically viable. Major competitors MetLife (NYSE: MET  ) and Prudential (NYSE: PRU  ) have already pulled back from long-term care, and Genworth might have to follow suit if it can't find other ways to make money from the segment. In addition, Genworth joined other insurers in settling claims that it and others failed to pay policy benefits to life-insurance customers, serving as a reminder that litigation risks continue to exist throughout the financial industry.
