Best Semiconductor Companies To Own In Right Now

2014 should be a banner year for semiconductor stocks.  Barring any financial calamities all of the stars are lined up for strong growth.

Let have a look at the factors that should cause semiconductor stocks to do well in 2014:

1) 2012 Capital spending was low:  After prices collapsed in 2011, semiconductor makers slashed their capital budgets, reducing their spending on plant and equipment.  This resulted in the price flattening the industry has experienced over the past year.  It generally takes 2 years for a change in semiconductor capital spending to create a shortage or oversupply, and the 2011 CapEx decrease, which has extended most of the way through 2013, has created a tightness that will become a full-fledged shortage in 2014.  Shortages re-establish profitability, and growing profits and revenues drive stock prices to increase.

    Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

The slightly better businesses are currently more expensive in terms of price/NCAV. They have less asset-based downside protection, but they are better businesses.

How do you quantify and qualify what is cheap enough? To me, there's a big difference in relative cheapness in a company selling at 74% of NCAV versus one selling at 95%. I'm wondering if I'm putting too much weight on this cheapness measurement instead of acknowledging that any decent business selling at less than NCAV is cheap enough. Yet, one has to have some quantifiable idea of when something is not cheap enough anymore.

Can you help me put this into a unified framework?

    I need to know:

    1. Whether the managers have made good decisions in the past, and whether their incentives work in the interests of the owners, because those kind of managers often add value to a company.

    2. The products a company sells will still be in demand for years to come, because if theye not then the past, which we know, does not tell us anything about the future, which we don.

    3. A company is financially strong enough to withstand the kinds of shocks companies typically experience bearing in mind some are more sensitive to events than others.

    4. How to judge whether the share price undervalues the company, bearing in mind the preceding three factors.

As noted previously, I rode the elevator up and then back down on Camtek (CAMT), a tiny Israeli automated optical inspection (AOI) company. By late 2008 the company had fallen to below $1 per share. Both of Camtek larger rivals, RTEC and ORBK, had dropped to absurdly low levels by November 2008. I used the opportunity to switch out of CAMT and some of my other losing propositions in favor of these superior companies. In the process, I created a large amount of tax loss carry-forwards which would allow me to minimize my future taxation when I decided to sell these cyclical entities.

    4. Italy
Some developed markets have also outperformed the Dow Jones Industrials. Italy's market is up 14%, and even the euro's weakness has given U.S. investors in iShares MSCI Italy (NYSEMKT: EWI  ) a 12% gain. Europe has made progress toward emerging from recession, and Italy has recovered more than some of its economically healthier peers because of the close brush with sovereign-debt issues that cut confidence in the Mediterranean nation's stock market substantially. As long as the government can keep debt under control, Italy could keep outperforming the Dow.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

This is quite a bit better than the 9.2% gain of the iShares MSCI Italy (EWI) or the 8.9% rise in the iShares MSCI Austria (EWO). All three have done significantly better than the Spyder Trust (SPY), which is up 3.6%. The French and German country ETFs have not yet moved above their late 2013 highs.

I'm about to buy shares in Investors Bancorp (NASDAQ: ISBC  ) , a soon-to-demutualize thrift that is undervalued. So my Special Situations portfolio will acquire shares shortly. Here's why I like the stock.

Performance and Dividends Impacted by Operating Stress

It should be clear from the above graphs that the earnings records of these three Dividend Champions have been far from steady, consistent or reliable. Therefore, I cannot get comfortable either recommending them or investing in them because I cannot get comfortable predicting what their future operating results may be. Furthermore, by examining the performance results associated with the above earnings and price-correlated graphs illustrates a lot of uncertainty. A focus on the earnings growth rate column illustrates a lot of stress on each company ability to keep their dividend streaks alive (Blue Circles).

    The Overvaluation Rejection

Other reasons besides irregular earnings growth that caused a Dividend Champion to be rejected include one of my all-time favorites, valuation. Or to be more precise overvaluation. The following example, McCormick & Co. (MKC), represents one of my favorite Dividend Champions based on a very consistent above-average record of earnings growth that produced its impressive dividend streak. The only reason that this Dividend Champion was rejected was because of current overvaluation.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

We're seeing the same exact price setup in shares of mid-cap insurance broker Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) -- just in the shorter-term. AJG has been forming an ascending triangle setup of its own since the beginning of May, hitting its head on resistance at $45.50. That's the breakout level to watch in shares this week.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $45.50 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Amanda Alix]

    Are they safe?
All the foregoing seems to make arguing about safety akin to picking nits, but at least some commenters are sounding the alarm about the escalating issuance of these kinds of leveraged loans. At the recent Milken Institute Global Conference, The CEO of Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL  ) noted that investors should rememberhow, during the financial crisis, a good number of these loans went belly-up.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On the other hand, students do seem to be making some moves that indicate greater fiscal responsibility for their own financial lives. Just last week, for-profit educational institution Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL  ) reported sharply lower enrollment, including a 25% drop in new students. ITT Educational (NYSE: ESI  ) saw more modest declines when it reported in April, but new student enrollment was still down 3.6%. A new investigation last month from the SEC over Corinthian Colleges (NASDAQ: COCO  ) marked just the latest in a string of regulatory crackdowns on for-profit educational institutions. More generally, increased government scrutiny as well as reports of higher student-loan default rates among many players in the for-profit industry compared to nonprofit educational institutions have led would-be students to question the value proposition for-profit educational companies offer.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Another big loser was the Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL  ) , which lost 10.27% of its value today. The company announced earnings yesterday after the market closed, and although it beat the Street's estimates for adjusted profit, its revenue misses expectations. For the quarter, revenue was down 16% as enrollment for the company's for-profit education unit, The University of Phoenix, fell 17% to 287,500 students. Apollo also announced that it expects revenue to come in at $3.65 billion to $3.7 billion for the full 2013 year while analysts had pinned the number to be higher at $3.71 billion.

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Watch For 2014

Expect relatively big short-term shifts among markets and assets as traders try to keep cheap money at work toward maximizing rewards while limiting risks, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks.

Was last week's rally—you remember Wednesday and Thursday, right?—on the surprise no taper decision from the Federal Reserve, a sign that stocks are headed even higher from here or an indication of an increasingly nervous and volatile market?

I'd vote from the latter.

Think about this indicator: A decision to put off a cut of what was probably no more than $10 billion to $15 billion a month in Fed purchases of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities was enough to drive the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (SPX) to a new all-time high.

That's clearly an overreaction, unless global financial markets see the Fed's decision on when to taper its purchases as a marker for the end of cheap money. I think the logic goes something like this: As long as the Fed doesn't taper at all, the moment when the central bank decides to start to raise short-term rates is postponed. When the Fed does start to taper, even if rising short-term rates aren't on the immediate agenda, they do go on the calendar.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) is making inroads in a key market, and at the rate its going, longtime stalwarts including Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) and IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) better stand up and take notice.

  • [By John Divine]

While Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) was easily the most pronounced laggard today, slumping 2.6%, Friday's underperformance is misleading. That's because the stock rocketed up 17.1% yesterday after slamming earnings expectations and forecasting better future results than anyone in his or her right mind was looking for. HP is a fairly volatile stock to begin with, and today's losses most likely stemmed from impatient investors taking profits going into the long weekend.

    Thinking inside the box
As further proof that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) is sick of Wintel, the PC giant has just partnered with Big G to launch a new productivity offering geared toward small and medium businesses, or SMB. The package is called HP SMB IT in a Box, and HP is positioning it as a "one-stop shop" targeting the SMB segment.

Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) might have fatter profit margins, for example, but both its current and forward P/E ratios are above its five-year average of 28. Whole Foods may be the go-to grocer for organic fare, but Kroger is increasingly offering organic items, as is even Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) . Meanwhile, Wal-Mart's current P/E is a bit above its 14.5 five-year average and its forward P/E a bit below. Its dividend, recently yielding 2.4%, has been growing faster, though, at a 15% average over the past five years. Wal-Mart's revenue has been growing more slowly than Kroger's.
