Stock markets have fallen modestly today after reaching record highs over the past few days. The Dow Jones Industrial Index (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is down 0.13% in late trading, and the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) has dropped 0.38%. But the real fireworks were in the commodities market, where gold fell 4.2% and oil dropped 2.5% by 3:15 p.m. EDT.

The Fed is discussing the end of quantitative easing, and the stock market continues to rise, so the "safe haven" that gold bugs find comforting is getting a little less attractive by the day. A commodity like gold can quickly plummet when traders decide to sell: There's little fundamental use for gold, so it trades based more on sentiment and fear than on fundamental supply and demand, unlike other commodities.

Oil fell after the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading for April dropped to 72.3 in April from 78.6 in March. This is just a preliminary reading, but it's the lowest since last July, and it shows that the economy could be weakening.

Hmm. This is a tough one. Oil up $10 will certainly help, but the overpay of XTO Energy (XTO), a nat gas company bought when prices were so much higher, will continue to bite earnings and the company's conservative nature will make it seem plodding versus the other companies here. I don't share the appreciation many have for this company. I regard it more as a bank than an exploration and production company. That's why I see it only inching up about $5 to $78 and change, a very disappointing member of the Dow considering what is does for a living.

Of the biggest four or five multinational integrated oil companies, my favorite remains Exxon Mobil(XOM).

The company's dominance will pay off if natural gas finally finds a floor and Exxon's stock buybacks and steady dividend make it the oil stock for pure buy-and-holders.

Apache Corp (NYSE: APA): APA is the largest US energy stock in Cramer’s trust. As of Feb. 15, the fund owns 1050 shares of APA, which is worth about $113,000. APA is also quite popular among hedge funds. At the end of the third quarter, there were 30 hedge funds with APA positions. Jean-Marie Eveillard’s First Eagle Investment Management had $147 million invested, and Ric Dillon and Boykin Curry were also bullish about the stock, each with more than $100 million invested in APA at the end of September.

We agree with these hedge fund managers. In late January, APA announced that it agreed to acquire Cordillera Energy Partners III LLC for $2.85 billion. Cordillera has nearly 254,000 net acres in the Anadarko Basin of Texas. It also has reserves of 71.5 million barrels of oil equivalent and its current net production is about 18,000 barrels per day. The acquisition will also provide APA with about 14,000 potential drilling locations. APA is already trading at attractive multiples. Its forward P/E ratio is 8.78 and its EPS is expected to grow at 11.22% on the average per year over the next five years. So its P/E ratio for 2014 is only 7.02.
